Yes, I have noticed the pattern of my postings... perhaps i should change my blog link to www.the-environmental-activist.blogspot.com ;)
This time, it is of Sydney (Australia's largest city) switching off for an hour. Sydney will be plunged into darkness for an hour on Saturday March 31st, to raise awareness on Global Warming. The first blackout ever in the world.
Paris has done something similar last month, not as heroic, but good enough - dimming lights for 5 minutes and turning off the lights of the Eiffel Tower.
According to our local daily the Star, this "Earth Hour" in Sydney has been planned for 10 months by WWF in partnership with city authorities, businesses and a major newspaper group. A thousand businesses have signed up, including many blue-chip companies on the Australian stock market. Even McDonalds is going to turn off its "Golden Arches" signs.
This definitely needs much planning and consent from people running businesses especially, as a great loss could be made by certain companies if there were to be a blackout. So it's nice to hear that a THOUSAND businesses have signed up and showed support.
Top restaurants have signed up and will serve diners by candle-light (That's not too bad...in fact, quite romantic!).
WWF Australia Communications director Andy Ridley said: "We're not asking people to go and live in a cave and eat cold beans" :)
Oh yeah, you may ask, how does switching off the power help curb global warming?
In order to generate energy (for electricity), fossil fuels are burnt and this produces Carbon Dioxide, the main greenhouse gas causing the atmosphere to trap all the heat. That explains the increase in global temperature.
Perhaps this hour-long blackout may cause people to think twice about what's really necessary in life. Some things CAN be lived without, perhaps? Think S I M P L E.
I don't know if Malaysia will ever do something like that to help the environment. From what i'm seeing.. quite unlikely.. just look at how we are making use of all the land we have (in Kuala Lumpur alone).
In Kiara/Hartamas - the place i used to go hiking is now GONE, and replaced by condominiums. In Mutiara Damansara/Damansara Perdana area - Condominiums and SHOPPING COMPLEXES!!! Haven't we got ENOUGH shopping centres around?! My god! It all contains the SAME shops anyway! Why not KEEP the land and trees and encourage lazy and materialistic city folks to go HIKING?! And they complain of the obesity rate in kids increasing. HAH!
Well, you get the idea-lah! It's all money oriented - what do they care about our environment. I'm not very hopeful of some blackout-helping-the-environment-scheme happening in Malaysia. Not in my lifetime.
Alrighty, this shall be my LAST posting on Global Warming, i promise! If any such articles pop up again in the future, it's because i can't help it ;)

hi, kay li... well... it took me almost half an hour just to read all your latest posts...anyway straight to your point... i think not just in kl...but in my hometown penang as well... as you know, penang is not as developed as kl but yet we are catching up the pace of kl by building a lot of huge mega malls, propose to build LRT, Monorail either... and also two new penang bridges.... many of the estates areas and villages including those in Sungai Nibong, Sungai Dua aress are now turned into ...city aliked style.. is really sad because i used to go visit my grandparents in village and play with all wild life animals... but right now... none of it exists anymore... the worse part is even the old heritage and historical buildings that have been around for more than hundred years are instructed by the government to be torn down...reason? well... to make way for the development of new complexes that i don't see as a necessity. Reason 1: Many of the shop lots in all the complexes like Looking Good , Prangin Mall all left empty. REason 2:Penangite average salary is only around 1 thousand something per household and most of them do not encourage extensive expenditure on all the new trendy clothings, so on and so forth.Reason 3: Penang is just a small island and we do not have enough land to build all these funny buildings. Take examples, the buildings in "Five Street" in Penang is built above the "manmade" land and there are lots of people staying there and yet the complexes are built in almost everywhere besides the "manmade" land... What's going on... No idea..
Personally, i do not think big shopping malls project modernization or civilization. How civilized we are are not determined by the big complexes but the mentality that we process.
From the environmentalist point of views... i think that is totally stupid to chop down all the trees, hills and torn down all the old buildings that have a lot of historical meanings behind just to make way for modernization... i hate that...
Anyway, Kay Li.. keep up with your good works, if you need any helps and supports for me to organize a group that help for the environment or human rights, just tell me because i hate to see all the injustices, stereotyping, discrimination. You are right, animals are part of this world and they have their rights to live in any way they like because they do not cost any harm to us, human being or the environment... somemore, they are so cute... haha...
ok, that's all i hope to say... gambade k!
although i'm not as smart and informative like you, i still hope support your determination and evrything you have just said in all your posts..
all best!
